A burn injury can change life in an instant. But for survivors and their families, leaving the hospital is often only the beginning.
Recovery can continue for months, years, and sometimes a lifetime. Along the way, people may need rehabilitation, mental health support, peer connections, housing assistance, adaptive resources, survivor programs, camps, financial assistance, or simply someone who can help point them in the right direction.
The problem is that these resources are often scattered across different organizations, websites, hospitals, and communities.
Healing Home Group created the Burn Survivor Network to help change that.
One Place to Start
The Burn Survivor Network (BSN) is a growing resource network designed to help burn survivors, families, caregivers, and members of the burn community more easily discover services and programs that may support their recovery journey.
Instead of expecting someone who may already be overwhelmed to know exactly which organization to contact, BSN provides a place to start.
The network brings together resources from organizations and programs serving the burn community across the United States and beyond. Visitors can search for resources based on their needs and location, helping connect people with services that might otherwise be difficult to discover.
BSN includes resources across areas such as peer and survivor support, rehabilitation, mental health, housing, camps and retreats, family support, adaptive programs, nonprofit organizations, educational resources, and other services connected to burn recovery.
And the network will continue to grow.
Introducing Ask BSN
Finding a directory was only part of the solution.
Sometimes people do not know what category they need. They simply know what they are going through.
That is why the Burn Survivor Network also includes Ask BSN, a conversational tool designed to help people explore the resources available through the network.
Someone might be looking for a burn survivor support program in their state, resources for a child with a burn injury, help for a caregiver, or organizations offering specific recovery services. Ask BSN provides another way to navigate those questions and discover possible resources.
Technology cannot replace a burn care team, mental health professional, peer mentor, or human connection. It can, however, make the first step toward finding those connections easier.
Building With the Burn Community, Not Around It
The Burn Survivor Network is not intended to replace the incredible organizations already serving burn survivors.
Quite the opposite.
BSN exists to help people find them.
Across the burn community, hospitals, nonprofits, survivor organizations, foundations, camps, support groups, rehabilitation programs, and individual advocates are doing extraordinary work. Yet survivors may never learn that some of these programs exist.
Our goal is to help close that information gap.
As the network grows, we also want organizations and members of the burn community to help us identify missing resources, update existing information, and introduce programs that deserve to be discovered.
A resource network becomes stronger when the community helps build it.
Part of a Bigger Mission
The Burn Survivor Network is an initiative of Healing Home Group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to support burn survivors and their families throughout the recovery journey.
BSN joins our growing work alongside initiatives such as All About Burns, Hope One Walk, and our long-term vision for survivor-centered transitional support through Healing Home Group.
Each initiative approaches the mission differently, but they share the same purpose: making sure burn survivors and their families have greater access to connection, information, support, and hope.
We know recovery does not end when someone leaves a burn center.
There are questions afterward.
There are surgeries afterward.
There are emotional challenges afterward.
There are victories afterward.
And there is an entire life afterward.
Help Us Build the Network
The Burn Survivor Network is live, but this is only the beginning.
We invite burn survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, nonprofit organizations, burn centers, support programs, and advocates to explore the network and help us make it better.
If you know about a resource that should be included, tell us.
If your organization serves the burn community, connect with us.
And if you are a survivor or family member searching for support, we hope BSN can make finding that next connection a little easier.
Because no burn survivor or family should have to figure out what comes next alone.
