After the Hospital: What Burn Survivors Really Need

Saturday, July 26, 2025
Leaving the hospital isn't the end of a burn survivor's journey—it's the beginning of a whole new battle. In this post, we dive into what survivors actually need after discharge—and how Healing Home Group is working to close the gap.

Burn survivors are often celebrated at discharge—photos are taken, goodbyes are shared, and there’s a sense of victory in the air. But what most people don’t see is what happens next.

Behind the smiles and the “you made it” cheers, many survivors leave the hospital facing an overwhelming reality: Where do I go now? Who will help me heal?

At Healing Home Group, we know this moment all too well. Our founder, Corey Halstead, was told to go to a homeless shelter after surviving a car fire that burned over 50% of his body. With open wounds, limited mobility, and a need for daily care, a shelter was not a safe—or humane—option.

He’s not alone.

Across the country, survivors are discharged from burn units with nowhere to go and no idea what comes next. Family members are often unprepared to care for them. Hotel rooms are expensive. Nursing facilities may not feel welcoming—or may not even accept them. And emotionally, survivors are often left to cope alone.

Here’s what survivors really need after the hospital:

A Clean, Safe Place to Heal

Open wounds and skin grafts require a sterile environment. Survivors need a space that’s free of chaos, trauma, or infection risk.

Support with Daily Needs

Many survivors can’t fully bathe, cook, or care for themselves in the early stages. They need help with everyday living—without judgment.

Mental and Emotional Support

The trauma doesn’t end at discharge. Survivors face PTSD, body image struggles, and deep grief. Safe spaces for processing and support are critical.

Community

One of the most healing things is simply knowing: I’m not alone. Meeting others who’ve walked the same path can be life-changing.

Dignity

Survivors deserve more than just a bed—they deserve a space where they feel human, empowered, and respected.

This is why Healing Home Group exists.

We’re working to build healing homes where survivors can stay after discharge—homes filled with compassion, privacy, and practical support. Until then, we’re partnering with hotels and local services to bridge the gap, because no one should have to choose between their recovery and a roof over their head.

If you believe in this mission, join us.
Together, we can make sure every survivor has a place to rest, rebuild, and rise.
